Sex and the shower scene

She was one of a quartet of young actresses who once shocked and delighted viewers with their raunchy exploits when Sex And The City first hit television screens.

But, a decade later, it seems, Kristin Davis has become altogether more demure.

Kristin, who played Charlotte in the cult show, has revealed that she was horrified when she was asked to take off her clothes for a shower scene in the much-anticipated Sex And The City movie which has its world premiere in London tomorrow.

Glamour girl: But Kristin Davis says she 'panics' over raunchy scenes

Davis, 43, recalled the moment when the film's writer and director Michael Patrick King told her to strip.

She said: "He tried to get me to be naked in the shower scene. I feel like I can't do that stuff. I feel really panicky about that stuff."

And she added that when she agreed to shoot a cut-down version of the scene, she still found the experience "extremely stressful", even though it did not involve total nudity.

It's all a far cry from the days when Kristin and her co-stars Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon and Sarah Jessica Parker seemed only too willing to push the boundaries for the cameras in the TV series, which first aired in 1998.

Davis's revelations lend weight to Hollywood rumours that the four stars are concerned about exposing too much flesh now they are all a decade older than when the show first began.

It is understood that Cattrall and Parker also refused to do nude scenes for the film. Only Nixon bares all in the movie.

King is understood to have decided to cast Davis in the risqué shower scene because she did not have a no-nudity clause in her contract. But she insisted that she was filmed only in profile for the scene and that she showed only the barest glimpse of her body.

In the TV series – which chronicled the romantic adventures of a set of single New York friends in the late Nineties and early Noughties – Davis, Cattrall and Nixon all appeared topless on more than one occasion.

Cattrall was notoriously uninhibited as the promiscuous Samantha and frequently appeared naked.

Brunette beauty: The new film opens with Kristin's character Charlotte happily married to lawyer Harry Goldenblatt with an adopted Chinese daughter

The British-born actress went on to co-author a sex guide with her then husband, New York businessman Mark Levinson, entitled Satisfaction: The Art Of The Female Orgasm.

Now divorced, however, even the 51-year-old actress is featured only partly nude in the new film, in a scene showing her fantasising about making love while covered in sushi.

And she has revealed how she was enraged when someone tried to snatch a photo of her.

She said: "While we were shooting, someone on the crew took a picture. We had to stop and although there wasn't a strip search or anything, no one could leave. I was lying on the table and saw a flash go off so I said, 'Get the police!'"

Meanwhile, Davis has also confided that she once relied on drink to try to overcome her introverted personality, which she feared was harming her career.

"Alcohol freed me," she said. "I was really shy and I didn't know how to come out of my shell. I drank for the same reason I loved acting.

"I wanted to feel things and express myself and be free. And I'm not naturally that way."

After realising that she was an alcoholic, she has kicked the habit.

In the new film, Charlotte, a Manhattan art dealer, is heavily pregnant.

Davis wears weights hidden under her padded-out costumes to help her to imitate a pregnant woman's walk.

A Hollywood insider told The Mail on Sunday: "She pulled it off very well but you could tell she wasn't comfortable with the shower scene. It is just very unexciting."
