Pirate Fancy Dress

Piracy dates back more than 3,000 years and was first described in Homer's The Iliad and The Odyssey. The Greek historian, Plutarch, provides the oldest, clearest definition of piracy, describing pirates as those who attack ships and maritime cities without legal authority.

'Piracy' and 'Pirates' were not always widely used words, for example, Norse riders of the 9th and 11th century were considered 'Danes' and 'Vikings'.

Most pirates of the Caribbean were either Dutch or English as Spain controlled most of the Caribbean during this time. Some of the best-known pirate bases were New Providence in the Bahamas, Tortuga and Port Royal. The most famous Caribbean pirates are Edward Teach, known as 'Blackbeard' (an Englishman) and Henry Morgan (a Welshman).

The Story of Edward Teach or 'Blackbeard'

Edward Teach was born in 1680 and was the most notorious English pirate in the Caribbean Sea. His best known vessel was the Queen Anne's Revenge, which is believed to have run aground near Beaufort Inlet, North Carolina in 1718.

Blackbeard is claimed to have had as many as fourteen wives. He often fought wearing a big feathered tricorn hat and with multiple swords, knives, and pistols by his side. It was reported in the General History of the Pirates that he had hemp and lighted matches woven into his enormous black beard during battle. People who saw him fighting say that he "looked like the devil" with his fearsome face and the smoke cloud around his head. Teach was reportedly shot five times and stabbed more than twenty times before he died and was decapitated in 1718. His head was taken back to England where it was hung on a pike in Bath.
